John is a former rugby player who played both Rugby Union and Rugby League at club and international level.

He was first capped for England playing Rugby Union in 1988. Then, in 1992, he was capped by Great Britain at Rugby League. In 1997 he was again capped by England, at Rugby Union.

This meant that he became the only Englishman ever to have played Union for England and represent Great Britain at Rugby League and then return to play Union for England.
